THE STORY OF LEGEZEE

by Irene

I took the car shopping with my grand-daughter one day when she complained to me that her legs ached and were going to sleep. I could see right away what the problem was: her feet were dangling over the edge of the car seat, which cut off her circulation, so I placed whatever I could find---books, groceries---under her feet to support them and she was OK after that.

From that point on, whenever we went shopping in the car, I would put an apple box under her feet to avoid the problem and it worked like a charm.

On a flight from Florida to California to visit my grandchildren, I was thinking about my grand-daughter's discomfort in the car when it hit me! Why don't any of the car seat manufacturers include a footrest on their car seats?

The airplane landed, I dashed to my daughter's car and blurted, "Where's the nearest baby store!?"

She said, "Uhhh, hello, Mom!"

Oops!

Well, we got to the baby store, and sure enough, NONE of the car seats had footrests!

I grabbed my daughter's camera, bought a roll of film, and began snapping off pictures of all the car seats in the store when the manager came up to me and asked what I was doing.

I gulped and said, "I'm looking for a car seat for my daughter and I don't know which one to get, so I thought I would take pictures of all of them and show them to her and she could choose."

I waited. He didn't seem impressed.

The manager looked at me for a time and simply said, "Oh."

He obviously didn't believe me, but of course had no idea what I was up to---but it must have been nothing to his benefit, so he asked me to refrain from taking any more photos. I felt guilty, so I bought a car seat from him to placate him, but asked if I could bring it back if my daughter didn't like it. He said that would be OK.

Now I had an expensive car seat I didn't need...or so I thought.

I looked at this thing taking up room in my car and had a flash of inspiration! I had a clever and creative friend with a metal shop nearby and rushed over to his works to discuss my idea with him.

His first question was, "Do you have a car seat I can look at?"

Have I got a car seat!? "I just happen to have a brand new one in the car, Gary!"

Gary got to work and we drew up a model together which he then fabricated, and which I used to obtain my patent. As you can see, he did a lovely job.

And that is the story of Legezee!
